The VARY-i is a multiangle LCD Viewfinder Loupe, made for the Panasonic GH4 camera.

The VARY-i is a multiangle LCD Viewfinder Loupe, made for the Panasonic GH4/GH3 camera. The VARY-i gives a good, clear view of the LCD monitor at any angle. The precise and solid construction prevents mechanical stress on the LCD monitor, but gives more stability to the shot.

The mounting plate is fitted with a limiter which fits under the camera and prevents rotation. The plate has two 1/4” and one 1/2“ threaded holes for direct screw mounting onto a tripod or other device. The extra holes in the plate are for the tripod quick release plate locking pins. After attaching the camera mounting plate, it is easy to quickly connect or disconnect the VARY-i Viewfinder. Just carefully slide it over the LCD monitor and slide the lip on the underside into the opening in the mounting plate. To secure it, there are two fixing screws: one on the bottom and one on the front.

It is possible to regulate the stiffness of the rotation with the large knob V on the side.
The LCD loupe has 2 modes of use: magnification mode and standard mode. Magnification mode provides a focusable 3x enlargement of the lcd monitor for stable and clear viewing. In Standard mode you can flip the entire eyepiece up to use it as a hood. The rubber eyecup can be adjusted for use with either the left or right eye.

HDMI port
The micro HDMI port is useable from top view to straight behind, there will be a HDMI lock with easily fits the bracket soon.

METABONES SPEED BOOSTER can be used if you remove the detachable tripod foot.

After shooting , you don’t have to disconnect the VARY-i from the camera for transport. Just loosen the red knob on the front ,then pull the VARY-i a little to the left and turn it to the front, push it to the right and fasten the red knob.

I learnt about this Loupe through HD Warrior (professional video broadcaster) who had given it an excellent review using it with his Panasonic Lumix GH4.
As a result, I have bought one which arrived a few days ago, and I have been trying it out, very successfully, particularly in outdoor conditions when it is difficult to view the LCD screen. The resulting image is sharp using the loupe to the extent of showing up the pixels on the screen!
I have found the recorded footage (video set at 4K) to be consistently good because I can actually see what I am recording!
There are one or two conflicts which are more to do with the camera than the loupe.
Whereas you can fit an external microphone, you can’t swing the loupe through the full angle range. Similarly with the monitoring of sound through headphones. I think the designers of the loupe have tried to achieve as much swing as is practicable, principally from the horizontal view angle downwards, but you can’t view from above the camera.
Now I wish there was a similar loupe for our Sony PXW-Z100 4K camera…….

Good clear optics, very little distortion, solid construction, looks and feels well made (because it is).

Best thing is it puts the loupe where I want it, next to, not on, the camera body.

It’s custom-designed for the GH4, so there’s no endless fiddling with positioning – it just fits.

As the Vary-i envelopes the LCD screen, it also strengthens it when it’s folded out – a major plus point. Good eyepiece focus adjustment – not enough for my unaided eyes, but then it never is. Lens flips up easily and firmly for touch screen usage.

Folding it into the front facing position isn’t possible without loosening it, sliding it slightly clear of the camera body, rotating the screen, then sliding the bracket back into place – but I never use it that way, so it hardly matters. Standard rear-facing and upward angled is brilliant.

It even provides protection for the tiny micro-HDMI cable, which could easily be clipped onto the Vary-i frame for stress relief. A right-angled cable would be handy (as long as it hung downwards), but it’s not an issue either way.

Headphone monitoring is an issue, as a cable pretty much won’t fit – but if you’re recording serious sound your recorder is probably off-camera anyway, so once again, not an issue.

It came well packaged, in lightning fast time, and Hans at Vary-i is quick and courteous in response to any queries.

So – Five Stars well earned!
